Model nutraceuticals and gut-skin axis

Personal care & well being In vivo efficacy

The gut-skin axis corresponds to a complex network of bidirectional communication between the digestive tract and the skin. This interaction is mediated by several mechanisms: the production of microbial metabolites, modulation of the immune system, and the action of hormones and neuroendocrine signals that connect the enteric nervous system to the skin.

In mice, studying this axis allows us to model how the gut microbiota/intestinal integrity influence skin physiology and the integrity of the skin barrier.

This model allows you to explore the development of novel preventive/curative strategies and identification of food-derived substances that can restore intestinal barrier and skin health.

At Vibiosphen, we provide a robust model of gut-skin axis in mouse to support the development of novel nutraceuticals. Our model is designed to generate clinically relevant data that help pharmaceutical, and biotechnology companies accelerate food supplement discovery.

Background of Model nutraceuticals and gut-skin axis

Our preclinical model of atopic dermatitis or psoriasis offers the possibility of evaluating the effect of manipulations targeting the microbiota (probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, faecal transplantation, antibiotics) or targeting the intestinal barrier.

These approaches pave the way for a better understanding of the systemic interactions between the gut and the skin, and for the emergence of new strategies aimed at restoring the homeostasis of the gut-skin axis.

Mouse Model nutraceuticals and gut-skin axis

Animals (mouse)

SKH1 hairless mouse.
SKH1 mice are euthymic and immunocompetent.  They are widely used in dermatologic and skin-related research, including wound healing studies, photobiology, skin carcinogenesis, UV radiation response, topical drug testing, and safety/efficacy trials.

Readouts in the model nutraceuticals and gut-skin axis

  • Gut/skin microbiota composition
  • Gut/skin inflammation
  • Intestinal barrier integrity (FITC dextran)
  • Skin barrier integrity (transepidermal water loss (TEWL), Natural Moisturizing Factors (NMFs))
