The threatening crisis of ESKAPE pathogens

ESKAPE pathogens are bacteria that threaten the world of a post antibiotics era. These six superbugs are among the most resistant bacteria strains.

Enterococcus faecium
Staphylococcus aureus
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Acinetobacter baumannii
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Enterobacter species

The particularity of these strains is that they can escape commonly used antibiotics due to their increasing multi-drug resistance.

The emergence of bacterial pathogens with acquired resistance to almost all available antimicrobials is one of the major concerns today. Resistant pathogens are causing 700,000 deaths per year. It is expected by 2050 that infectious diseases will be responsible for more than 10 million deaths per year, a number higher than the 8.2 million caused by cancer today.

The need for new solutions is urging. The WHO has published a list of priority antibiotics needed (including for ESKAPE pathogens) to encourage pharma and biotech to develop new therapies. Among these alternative therapies, many are under preclinical development or clinical development such as bacteriophage therapy, antimicrobial peptides, photodynamic therapy, antibacterial antibodies, phytochemicals, and nanoparticles as antibacterial agents.
